Key squares: the attacking king on any of them wins
0/16
The idea
The defender draws by keeping the attacking king off the key squares: stay in front of the pawn and take the opposition whenever the kings meet.
Stand in the doorway; step back only straight.
- Put your king in front of the pawn, as far forward as is safe.
- When the enemy king comes opposite, take the opposition: move so that it is their turn with the kings facing.
- If you must give ground, step straight back, not to the side, so you can retake the opposition.
- On the last rank, with the pawn on the 7th, the stalemate trick saves you: Kf8 or Kd8 at the right moment.
