The Viveka Method

Find the candidates, rank them, check them: a Stockfish-calibrated method for choosing the better chess move.

Strong players don't look at more moves than weaker ones; they find better candidates and choose better among them. This book teaches both: a quick scan for candidates and a score to rank them, every weight fitted to Stockfish, then practice on a hundred positions. On openings it never saw, the method's choice loses 66 cp on average, against 80 cp for the first edition's formula and 352 cp for a random move.

By Sigmoid Vedanta Technologies. 74 A4 pages, with a diagram, the scan and a term-by-term score for every position.

This edition teaches Viveka v2. The website's calculator and drills now use v3 (find the quadrant, then score), described in the free research article.

Part I · The method

Scan, score, check: the candidate scan, the scoring terms, the safety check, the entropy signal that tells you when to calculate, and one position worked from start to finish.

Part II · The evidence

19,007 engine positions with every legal move scored, positional values learned from 1,62,775 depth-22 positions, time-evolution and entropy studies, every test result, and the ideas that failed.

Part III · 100 positions

34 openings, 33 middlegames, 33 endgames from held-out openings, chosen by a fixed rule and worked with scan, score and check. The method is within half a pawn in 51 of them, and the misses are explained.

Why this book is different

  • Every weight is fitted to data, not asserted. Point counts in chess have failed before because nobody tested them, so we did.
  • Tested on openings it never saw, with Stockfish at depth 22 as the answer key. The book reports average loss, blunder rate and the comparison with a shallow engine.
  • The misses are printed too, with a chapter on where the method stops and one on the ideas that failed.
  • Every position links to the online calculator and daily drills, so you practise rather than just read.

Who it is for

  • Club and online players (roughly 800–1800) who lose games to one-move oversights.
  • Coaches who want a teachable, checkable routine for choosing between candidate moves.
  • Readers who like to see the evidence: Part II reads like a short research paper.

Method v2.0. On the book's 100 positions the method matches Stockfish's first choice in 41 and is within 50 cp in 51 (average loss 97 cp; the first edition's formula: 125 cp). These positions were selected because the choice matters, so they are harder than average (74% within 50 cp on all test positions).
